Allowed initials in pan card name

Initial in Name means the abbreviation / short name of full name. For the pan card purpose, initial means the abbreviation / short name with maximum 2 (Two) alphabets in First Name , Middle Name Last / Surname.  There are following prevailing rules as per Income-tax Department :-

A. FOR NAME IN APPLICATION AND ITD DATABASE

1.    First Name of Individual : Initial as one (single) and two (2)  alphabets as ‘First Name’ are not allowed. However, following initials of two alphabets are allowed as ‘First Name’ :-

In case of individual applicant, ‘First Word’ of his name will be the ‘First Name’ of the applicant but a single alphabet and two alphabets (except above 90) as ‘First Name’ are not allowed. For Example – An individual has the name ‘Kailash Chandra Rambilas Maheshwari’. In that case, First Name will be only ‘Kailash’ and not the ‘Kailash Chandra’. Likely, if applicant has the name “K. C. Agrawal, then ‘K’ as first name will not allowed.

 But over and above, complete name should be exactly matched with the prescribed ID available with the applicant.

2. Middle Name of Individual : Initial as single alphabet and above mentioned 90 initials two alphabets are allowed as middle name but initials with two alphabets except above mentioned 90 initials are also not allowed as middle name.In case of individual applicant, if name contains only one word or two words, then, there will be no ‘Middle Name’ but if the name contains more than two words, then all the words except first and last words will be the ‘middle name’. Initial as single alphabet is also allowed as middle name. For Example – An individual has the name ‘ Kailash Chandra Rambilas Maheshwari’. In that case, Middle Name will be ‘Chandra Rambilas’. and if applicant has the name “Kailash R Maheshwari, then ‘R’  will be the Middle Name.But over and above, complete name should be exactly matched with the prescribed ID available with the applicant.

3. Last/Sur Name of Individual : Initial as one (single) and two (2)  alphabets as ‘Last/Sur Name’ are not allowed. However, above mentioned 90 initials of two alphabets are allowed as ‘Last/Sur Name’ but initials with two alphabets except above mentioned 90 initials are also not allowed.In case of individual applicant, ‘Last Word’ of his name will be the ‘Last Name’ of the applicant but a single alphabet initial as ‘Last Name’ is not allowed and at the same time, ‘two words’ as Last name is also not allowed. For Example – An individual has the name ‘ Kailash Chandra Rambilas Maheshwari’. In that case, Last Name will be only ‘Maheshwari’But over and above, complete name should be exactly matched with the prescribed ID available with the applicant.

B.  NAME OF INDIVIDUAL TO BE PRINTED ON PAN CARDFirst Name : Initial as one (single) alphabet and two (2)  alphabets as ‘First Name’ is allowed to be printed on pan card.Middle Name : Only Initial as one (single) alphabet for ‘Middle Name’ is allowed to be printed on pan card and Initial as two (2)  alphabets as ‘Middle Name’ is not allowed.Last/Sur Name : No initial is allowed as Last/Sur Name but complete Last/Sur Name  should be printed on pan card.C. FOR NAME OF NON-INDIVIDUALSIn case of non-individuals such as HUF, Partnership Firm, Company, Trust, Association / AOP etc., there will be no first and middle name but complete name will be written as ‘Last Name’ only and if name is too long, then it may be continued from the row of Last Name to the row Middle Name and so on.But over and above, complete name should be exactly matched with the prescribed ID available with the applicant.
